Happy New Year! Welcome to the January 2014 edition of the YLS Electronically-In-Touch publication. It is hard to believe that half of our 75th anniversary year has gone by. We had a couple of very successful Toys for Tots Holiday Parties throughout the State. We are proud to be involved in gathering toys for such a great cause while also providing our members with the ability to network with one another during the holiday season. Pictures from some of those events are included below.

NYSBA's Annual Meeting will take place at the New York Hilton during the week of January 27th. The Young Lawyers Section will be holding both its half-day CLE program as well as its two-day Bridging the Gap program at that time. On Wednesday, January 29th, our half-day CLE program will focus on consumer and corporate bankruptcy issues. The program is co-chaired by Erica Weisgerber, Esq. and Nathan Kaufman, Esq. For further details and to register for the program, please see below.

Once the CLE program is complete, we are excited to present the Outstanding Young Lawyer award to Muhammad U. Faridi, a young attorney who has already demonstrated a strong commitment to both the community and the legal profession. Our Executive Committee meeting will immediately follow the award presentation. During the meeting we will be electing the 2014-2015 Officers and Executive Committee.

On Thursday and Friday, January 30th and 31st, we will hold our annual Bridging the Gap CLE Program, which is being co-chaired by Courtney Radick, Esq. and John Christopher, Esq. The program will provide 16 CLE credits and will cover a variety of substantive legal topics, including intellectual property, personal injury, appeals, matrimonial law, estate planning, ethics and much more! Please see below for further details and to register for the program.

We are excited that our membership continues to grow. We now have more than 4,350 members and are one of the largest sections of NYSBA.

Our last event for the 75th anniversary term will be our Fifth Annual Trial Academy, being held at Cornell Law School, in Ithaca, New York, from March 29 through April 2, 2014. After that, YLS will have the now-annual U.S. Supreme Court Admissions Program in Washington, D.C., on June 8-9, 2014 - the first program of the 2014-2015 Term - during which Sarah Gold, our current Chair-Elect, will be Chair.

We are extremely proud to have a very active Executive Committee. If you are interested in becoming more involved with YLS, please feel free to email me at lschoenfeld@soklaw.com.

2013 Young Lawyers Section 3rd/4th District Toys for Tots Holiday Event

On December 5, 2013, the third and fourth judicial districts of the NYSBA Young Lawyers Section co-sponsored, together with the Real Property Law Section and the Torts Insurance and Compensation Law Section, the annual Toys for Tots Holiday Event at the C.H. Evans Brewing Company at the Albany Pump Station. Approximately seventy people attended the event, which was organized by YLS district representatives Erica Hines and Teige Sheehan on behalf of the third judicial district, and Lauren Palmer and Brett Blair on behalf of the fourth judicial district. All attendees brought an unwrapped toy to be donated to the Toys for Tots charity program. The well-attended event was a successful and fun night of networking for all. The event led to a very large donation of toys to benefit less fortunate children in the area.
