Assemblyman Gottfried Introduces Universal Health Care Proposal

On December 5, Assemblyman Richard Gottfried (D-Manhattan) proposed that New York create New York Health Plus, a publicly funded health insurance program that would cover every New Yorker. Assemblyman Gottfried, who chairs the Assembly Health Committee, envisions that New York Health Plus would build upon current public insurance programs by merging the Family Health Plus and Child Health Plus programs. Individuals would enroll in those health plans that chose to participate in the New York Health Plus program. According to Assemblyman Gottfried's press release, a copy of which can be found here, New Yorkers currently spend $63 billion on health insurance. Under the New York Health Plus program, that number would be reduced by $4 billion. A copy of Assemblyman Gottfried's full report on the proposed New York Health Plus program can be found here.
