Empire State Stem Cell Board (ESSCB) draft Strategic Plan-public comments due June 13 2008

Latest News from NYSTEM:
ESSCB's draft Strategic Plan was developed through an iterative, collaborative process that involved members from both Committees of the Board, as well as external experts and NYSTEM staff. The Board adopted the draft Strategic Plan at its May 13, 2008, meeting.

To maintain flexibility and allow the Board to respond quickly to new discoveries in stem cell research, the Board plans to reassess the Plan on an annual basis as a rolling five-year framework for how the state's $600 million commitment to stem cell research may best accelerate scientific discoveries into novel prevention and treatment strategies.

Interested parties may submit comments on the draft for the Board's consideration prior to the Board taking final action on the document at its June 27, 2008, meeting. The draft Strategic Plan may be accessed at the URL shown below, along with an electronic form for submitting comments up to June 13, 2008 or submitted by mail. The Board will consider submitted comments at its June 27, 2008 meeting.
The Plan is a must read to get good bearings in the complex world of stem cell research. Their intent is to form a public-private partnership between the State and its research and biotech community.
The Plan's ELSIE (2) section (page 25) reveals certain goals and topics of interest including for example, issues about:
- informed consent from individuals participating in stem cell research,
- payment for participation in research,
- justice issues pertaining to State funding of innovative research and how the benefits of such research should be distributed to citizens and residents, plus more.
This is an exciting opportunity to participate in an important process.

ESSCB's full committee meeting occurred on May 13, 2008 at Empire State Plaza, Albany, NY. The Ethics Committee met from 10:35 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., the full Board is met from 12:45 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., and the Funding Committee met from 2:40 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. View the archived webcast (available for 30 days post-meeting) at: http://www.health.state.ny.us/events/webcasts/archive/
