NYSTEM, Federal Stem Cell Policy Developments

Update on Federal HESC Stem Cell research funding policy:
-on Sept 10, the NIH (2) stated that

With the temporary stay [of the Court's injunction] in place, NIH has resumed intramural research and will continue its consideration of grants that were frozen by the preliminary injunction on August 23. The suspension of all grants, contracts, and applications that involve the use of human embryonic stem cells has been temporarily lifted.

-on Sept 13, Sen. Arlen Specter (D-Pa.) introduced The Stem Cell Research Advancement Act of 2010 (3 pp) for himself, Senator Boxer and Senator Feinstein. The bill would codify federal funding of embryonic stem cell research. A first hand account about this complex subject in law is presented in his Statement on the Bill published in the Congressional Record(3).
Nature recently published perspectives on the global repercussions of the challenge for US/NIH HESC research funding.(4)
Upcoming on Oct 4-6,the World Stem Cell Summit event will be held in Detroit , MI (5); it will be the largest multi-track stem cell conference produced to date.
